CATARACT

The rays reflecting form the objects we look at are broken by the transparent layer in front of the eye (cornea) and the lens firstly and then focus on ‘retina’ layer which is placed behind the eyes and which is formed of nerve fibers. Image of the object formed on retina is carried to the seeing centre by means of optical nerve and seeing happens.

Cataract is formed as a result of lenses losing its transparency and thickening. Lens is located behind the colorful layer and it makes the incoming ray to focus on the recipient cells on the nerve layer of the eye. As a result of lens thickening and reduction in light transmittance, that is to say development of cataract, the image will not reach the recipient cells sufficiently and the seeing ability will be reduced.

REASONS
Aging, genetic disorders, intraocular reactions, bumps  to the eye, intraocular microbial disorders etc. can cause cataract , however, the most common reason is aging. In this case, cell proliferation occurs with the aging and metabolism gets disrupted, hence the seeing ability is reduced by the time...

TREATMENT METHOD
The only treatment method of cataract is surgery.  There is no treatment method other than surgery.

CATARACT SURGERY
With technical equipments and methods used in Akademi Hospital EYE CLINIC, it is not necessary to wait for operating on the eye until the cataract gets mature. The patient’s seeing ability is increased after the surgery.

The basis of the surgery is to remove the thickened lens from the eye and replace it with a new one. That lens called ‘intraocular lens' is permanent inside the eye. It makes everything that the old lens does and it is not felt by the patient.  Seamless FAKO method is the latest technology for the placement of intraocular lens.

Cataract Surgery with FACO (facoemulsification technique)
the eye is entered through a small cut and the surgery is completed without putting any sutures. Therefore, it is colloquially known as "seamless" or 'laser' cataract surgery.  Delay in cataract surgery can even cause irreversible blindness. Thanks to FACO it is not necessary for cataract to get mature.

Seeing is one of the most important elements that make a person hold on to the life. For this reason, a regular eye examination is one of the most important steps to be taken for a healthy life.  Also, it should not be forgotten that diseases and the impairment of seeing on the eye can only be revealed by an eye doctor. Even if he does not have a complaint, a person over the age of 40 should be examined at least once in a year.  According to the suggestion of the doctor that period can be once in 6 months for the kids or even more frequently in some special situations.  First eye control is ideal for a 3 years old child without any complaints.

Eye examination in Akademi Hospital is conducted with state of the art devices by a specialist staff with care and in detail.

Stages of Eye Examination;

Visual Acuity Test
Your ability to see the slight details is measured with letters that gets smaller.

Need for Glasses Examination
Being unable to see clearly because of breaking impairment that occurred in our eyes will cause the need for glasses.
Akademi Hospital's all breaking impairment examinations are conducted with state of the art technological computerized devices.

Examination of Eyelids
Eyelids, lachrymal glands, lachrymal excretory apparatus system and the areas around the eye will be examined.

Examination of Eye Muscles
Internal muscles of the eyes control the movement of eyeball and it is directly related to the brain. External muscles of the eye make the eyes remain in parallel.  Situation of eye muscles are determined in strabismus and diplopia examinations.

Eye Tension Measurement
Intraocular pressure is determined with tonometry test.

Biomicroscopic Examination
Cornea, iris, lens and floater details are examined and cataract can be diagnosed before it gives symptoms.

Fundus Oculi Examination
Symptoms regarding retina decollement, glaucoma, hypertension, brain tumor and other diseases in the body can be determined with this examination.

It should not be forgotten that possibilities regarding many diseases such as liver disorder, diabetes, brain tumors and AIDS can be determined or these diseases and disorders can be diagnosed during the eye examination.
