SINUSITIS

Sinusitis is the infection of airy spaces around the nose which are called sinuses. It is called acute sinusitis in the cases of short-time infections and chronic sinusitis in the cases of infections taking more than 3 months. Acute sinusitis  acts as an upper respiratory tract  infection and is treated similarly and surgical treatments are used in addition to drug treatment in the cases of chronic sinusitis.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is put with the diseases history, endoscopic treatment of the nose and radiological researches. Computerized Tomography (CT) is the most useful technique in terms of radiological examination.

Findings

Complaints such as head and face aches, nasal blockage, coughing, fatigue and a strong common cold  which is like nasal flow exist in the cases of sinusitis.

Drug Therapy

In acute sinusitis and also in some of the chronic sinusitis cases an appropriate antibiotic treatment of 10-14 days and some drugs intended for covering the swelling inside the nose is used. Surgical treatment for the causing factor is the most appropriate in cases of chronic sinusitis.  Drug therapy alone will not be useful.

ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY

How are the results of the operation?

Endoscopic surgery has very successful results since it is a surgery that predicts the correction of disrupted physiology and observes the sinus functions. The surgery conducted by means of special surgery tools and endoscopes that are showing the slightest detail of the nose and the sinuses eliminates the sinusitis problem largely together with an appropriate technique and patient monitoring.

Is the surgery easy?

Functional Endoscopic Sinusitis Surgeries are the surgeries easy for the patients but difficult for doctors. The physician to conduct the surgery should have all the technical equipments and information, experience and knowledge.  This surgical intervention conducted under local or general anesthesia is completed in 1-2 hours.  The post-operative period is very easy and since a tampon that blocks the nose completely is not used usually the patient will be back to his normal activities.

Is the surgery dangerous in any meaning?

The physician to conduct the endoscopic sinusitis surgery should be absolutely very experienced about this. Because of its proximity to brain, eye and some large veins, the sinusitis surgery can cause undesired results in inexperienced hands. Although no important complications have been experienced during the surgeries that have been being conducted since 1989, which is the first time this surgery is applied, each operation is assessed with a separate care and complications are prevented.  The question here should be "Is there any risk in sinus surgeries which are not endoscopic?".  In addition to being the problem solving surgery technique, it is a fact that the endoscopic surgeries also reduce the complication risk because of increasing the control of endoscope usage.

How long it will take me to heal?

The patients are discharged usually in the first surgery day and they are monitored on foot. A buffer that does not block the nose is removed in 1-2 days and the patient is taken under monitoring and the patients can return to their works in 5th day.  The patients are monitored for long term after 3 weeks of early monitoring period
